Ipoh to Tioman Island — 6-Hour Drive Guide or Fly via KL

Travelling from Ipoh to Tioman Island typically takes 6 to 7 hours total — a 5 to 6 hour drive south on the North-South Expressway to Kuala Lumpur, then east via the Karak Highway and LPT1 East Coast Expressway to Tanjung Gemok jetty, followed by a 60-minute Tioman SpeedBoat crossing. Total driving distance is approximately 460 km — longer than KL or JB but shorter than Penang. For Ipoh-based travellers, the long drive is best paired with an overnight stop in Kuala Lumpur or Kuantan. A Firefly flight to KL is a faster alternative; note that scheduled Subang → Tioman flights ceased in 2025.

Driving route from Ipoh

Six steps via NSE & LPT1

NSE southbound from Ipoh → KL ring road → Karak Highway → LPT1 East Coast Expressway → Federal Route 3 → Tanjung Gemok jetty.

01

NSE (E1) southbound from Ipoh

From Ipoh, take the North-South Expressway (NSE / E1) southbound towards Kuala Lumpur. Entry points include Ipoh Selatan (Simpang Pulai) and Ipoh Utara (Jelapang).

02

Drive 2.5 to 3 hours to KL outskirts

Continue south on the NSE through Perak and into Selangor. Pass Tapah, Bidor, Slim River, Tanjung Malim, and Rawang on the way to the KL ring road.

03

Connect to Karak Highway

At an appropriate KL ring road interchange (typically MRR2 or NKVE), transition to the Karak Highway (E8) eastbound towards Kuantan.

04

LPT1 East Coast Expressway

From Karak, continue onto the LPT1 East Coast Expressway (the Karak–Jabor stretch operated by ANIH). Drive east through Pahang towards Kuantan.

05

Exit at Maran (or continue to Kuantan)

Exit LPT1 at Maran and take state roads south to Federal Route 3 — there is no dedicated Jengka exit on the LPT, so check current signage. Many drivers prefer continuing to Kuantan and picking up Federal Route 3 there.

06

Tanjung Gemok jetty

Approximately 5 km north of Kuala Rompin, follow signage for "Jeti Tanjung Gemok" and park in the designated passenger lot.

Recommended approach

The 2-day journey

Splitting the drive over two days is the recommended approach for Ipoh travellers — safer, more relaxed, and easier on early sailings. Kuantan is the preferred overnight stop because Day 2 is short.

Day 1

Ipoh to KL or Kuantan

  • Option A — Overnight in Kuala Lumpur: drive 2.5 to 3 hours from Ipoh, stay overnight in central KL.
  • Option B — Overnight in Kuantan (recommended): drive 5 to 6 hours via NSE + Karak + LPT1, stay overnight in Kuantan.
  • Option B is recommended because Day 2 is shorter and you can sleep in before the morning sailing.

Public transport

Bus & train options

Practical for solo travellers without a car — but transfer time is significant.

Bus

directions_busLong-distance bus from Amanjaya Terminal

9 to 11 hours total with transfers

Bus from Ipoh Amanjaya Bus Terminal to Kuala Lumpur (3 to 4 hours), then transfer at TBS for Mersing or Kuala Rompin (5 to 6 hours). From Mersing, transfer by taxi to Tanjung Gemok jetty (~50 km, RM50 to RM80).

Train + bus

trainETS to KL Sentral, then bus to Mersing

8 to 10 hours total · not recommended

ETS Gold/Platinum from Ipoh Railway Station to KL Sentral (2 to 3 hours), transfer to TBS, then bus from TBS to Mersing or Kuala Rompin (5 to 6 hours). Total transfer time makes this impractical for most travellers.

Tips for Ipoh travellers

What we tell Ipoh guests

  • Plan a 2-day journey by car. A direct 6-hour drive plus the 1-hour speedboat in a single day is fatiguing.
  • Recommended overnight: Kuantan. Closer to the jetty for a relaxed Day 2 — only 1 to 1.5 hours of driving left.
  • Consider Firefly to Subang for solo or couple travellers — the 30-minute flight saves significant fatigue.
  • Refuel and eat at NSE rest stops. Multiple R&Rs are available between Ipoh and KL.
  • Top up fuel at R&R Maran (the last major stop on LPT1 before exiting south) — stations on the secondary roads between the LPT exit and Kuala Rompin are limited.
  • Book your speedboat in advance to confirm seats — sailings sell out on weekends and school holidays.
