Penang to Tioman Island — 6-Hour Drive or Fly via KL/Kuantan

Travelling from Penang to Tioman Island typically takes 7 to 8 hours total by car — a 6 to 7 hour drive via Penang Bridge, the North-South Expressway, Karak Highway, and LPT1 East Coast Expressway to Tanjung Gemok jetty, followed by a 60-minute Tioman SpeedBoat crossing. Total driving distance is approximately 460 km, the longest of any major Malaysian origin city. For most Penang-based travellers, the drive is best broken into 2 days with an overnight stop in Kuala Lumpur or Kuantan. A Penang → KL flight on Firefly or AirAsia significantly reduces fatigue. Note that scheduled Subang → Tioman flights ceased in 2025 (SKS Airways).

Driving route from Penang

Six steps via NSE & LPT1

Penang Bridge → NSE southbound → Karak Highway → LPT1 East Coast Expressway → Federal Route 3 → Tanjung Gemok jetty.

01

Penang Bridge southbound

From Penang Island, cross via Penang Bridge (toll RM7) to mainland Seberang Perai. From the Butterworth area, take the North-South Expressway (NSE / E1) southbound.

02

North-South Expressway to KL area

Drive approximately 4 hours south on the NSE through Perak and Selangor. Pass through Ipoh and continue to KL outskirts.

03

Connect to Karak Highway

At the appropriate KL ring road interchange, connect to the Karak Highway (E8) eastbound towards Kuantan.

04

LPT1 East Coast Expressway

Continue from Karak onto the LPT1 East Coast Expressway (the Karak–Jabor stretch operated by ANIH). Drive east towards Kuantan.

05

Exit at Maran (or continue to Kuantan)

Exit LPT1 at Maran and take state roads south to Federal Route 3 — there is no dedicated Jengka exit on the LPT, so check current signage. Many drivers prefer to continue to Kuantan and pick up Federal Route 3 there.

06

Tanjung Gemok jetty

Approximately 5 km north of Kuala Rompin, follow signage for "Jeti Tanjung Gemok".

Recommended approach

The 2-day journey

Splitting the drive over two days is the recommended approach for Penang travellers — safer, more relaxed, and easier on early sailings.

Flight options

Skip the long highway drive

Flying significantly reduces total journey time and fatigue. Three onward connections from Penang.

Option 1 flight_takeoff

Penang to Subang Skypark (Kuala Lumpur)

Time ~50 min flight + 4 hour drive Notes Total time including flight: ~5.5 to 6 hours

Operators: Firefly (multiple daily flights), AirAsia. From Subang, drive approximately 4 hours to Tanjung Gemok jetty.

Option 2 connecting_airports

Penang to Sultan Ahmad Shah Airport (KUA), Kuantan

Time ~1 hour direct + 1.5 hour drive Notes Total time including flight + connection: ~4 to 5 hours

Limited direct routes available — usually requires KL connection. From KUA, drive 1.5 hours south on Federal Route 3 to Tanjung Gemok.

Option 3 flight_off

Penang to Tioman Airport (TOD) — not currently viable

Time No scheduled service Notes Private charter only

Scheduled commercial flights to Tioman Airport ceased in early 2025 (SKS Airways ended operations). Berjaya Air operates private charter from Subang only — impractical for individual travellers from Penang. Reach Tioman via the speedboat from Tanjung Gemok instead.

Public transport

Bus & train options

Practical for solo travellers without a car — but transfer time is significant.

Bus

directions_busLong-distance bus from Sungai Nibong

9 to 10 hours to Mersing

Buses operate from Sungai Nibong terminal to Kuala Lumpur, Mersing, and Kuala Rompin. From Mersing or Kuala Rompin, transfer by taxi to Tanjung Gemok jetty.

Train + bus

trainETS to KL Sentral, then bus to Mersing

11 to 13 hours total · not recommended

ETS train from Butterworth to KL Sentral (4 to 5 hours), transfer to TBS bus terminal, then bus from TBS to Mersing or Kuala Rompin (5 to 6 hours). Total transfer time makes this impractical for most travellers.

Tips for Penang travellers

What we tell Penang guests

  • Plan a 2-day journey by car. Direct 6 to 7 hour drives plus the 1-hour speedboat in a single day is exhausting and risks missing the sailing.
  • Recommended overnight: Kuantan. Closer to the jetty than KL — more relaxed start on Day 2.
  • Consider flying for solo or couple travellers. Cost premium is often offset by reduced fatigue and shorter journey.
  • Book domestic flights early. Firefly and AirAsia routes can sell out for weekends and public holidays.
  • Use Subang for KL connections — Subang is faster to reach Tanjung Gemok than KLIA.
  • For groups of 4 to 7, driving is more cost-effective than flying.
FAQ

Frequently asked questions

01 How long does it take to travel from Penang to Tioman?

The total journey from Penang to Tioman Island takes 7 to 8 hours by direct drive plus 60-minute speedboat. Most travellers split the drive into 2 days with an overnight stop. Flying via KL or Kuantan can reduce total time to 4 to 6 hours.

02 Should I drive or fly from Penang to Tioman?

For groups of 3 or more, driving is more cost-effective despite the longer time. For solo travellers and couples, flying via Subang or Kuantan saves significant fatigue and can be similarly priced when split costs are compared.

03 Where should I stay overnight on a Penang-Tioman drive?

Kuantan is the recommended overnight stop because it’s only 1 to 1.5 hours from Tanjung Gemok jetty. Alternative options include Kuala Lumpur (adds 4 hours to Day 2 driving) or Mersing (more rural accommodation).

04 Can I fly directly from Penang to Tioman?

No. There are no direct flights from Penang to Tioman Airport, and the previous Subang Skypark → Tioman connection ceased in early 2025 when SKS Airways ended operations. Berjaya Air operates private charter only. Most Penang travellers reach Tioman via the speedboat from Tanjung Gemok.

05 How much do tolls cost from Penang to Tanjung Gemok?

Total tolls one way are approximately RM60 to RM80 for a Class 1 passenger vehicle, including Penang Bridge, NSE, Karak Highway, and the LPT1 East Coast Expressway. 2026 toll rates remain unchanged from 2025 under government compensation.

06 Is the Penang to Tioman drive safe to do in one day?

Driving 6 to 7 hours plus a 1 hour speedboat in a single day is physically demanding and not recommended. Fatigue is a serious safety risk on the LPT1 East Coast highway. Plan a 2-day journey or fly part of the way.

07 What is the cheapest way to get from Penang to Tioman?

For groups of 3 to 4, driving and splitting fuel/tolls/accommodation is cheapest. For solo travellers, the bus from Sungai Nibong to Mersing plus transfer is cheapest but takes 11 to 13 hours total.
